Event Guide for free Events in Greater Dublin

The "Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)" is Dublin's most popular event magazine that focuses on the vast amount of cultural events for no admission charges. For more than 800 editions over 16 years it is a weekly e-mail magazine that lists and recommends up to 200 free cultural events in Dublin City and in the Greater Dublin area week after week. Gigs, Festivals, Markets, Talks, Lectures, Exhibitions and much more for all age groups are included.

Fifty years ago yesterday, a few teenagers got together in Larry Mullen’s kitchen in Artane after he had put up a notice in Mount Temple school looking for musicians. What followed became U2 and one of Dublin’s biggest cultural exports ever.

And so yesterday they went back to where it all started. They played at Mount Temple for students and staff and later surprised Dublin with a performance from the balcony of Bewley’s on Grafton Street. No giant stadium, no enormous production and no months of ticket sales. Just one of the world’s biggest bands playing in the city where it all began.

There is something I really like about that. Dublin can sometimes frustrate me with the cultural things it loses, closes or fails to support properly, but then it produces moments like this. Unexpected, slightly mad and happening right in the middle of the city. And best of all from a Dublin Event Guide point of view: you didn’t need an expensive ticket to experience it. Of course it would have been nice to know about it beforehand, but imagine what would have happened if U2 had announced a free gig on Grafton Street in advance. Tens of thousands of people would have turned up and Grafton Street definitely wasn’t built for that. ;-)

September is coming to an end now and October will naturally bring fewer outdoor events. But that doesn’t mean Dublin is going quiet. Culture just moves indoors, changes shape and occasionally appears on a balcony when nobody expects it.

+++ DUBLIN FESTIVAL OF HISTORY
The Dublin Festival of History will run from 26 September to 11 October 2026. All events are free, but ticketed. A lot of talks take place in libraries around Dublin and in addition there is a “Big Weekend” when a lot of talks happen in concentrated form. The Big weekend is this weekend 26+27 September and the venues on Sat 26 Sep are Richmond Barracks, Pearse Street Library, Central Library, Cabra Library and Coolock Library. On Sun 27 Sep the venue is the Round Room at the Mansion House. +++ DUBLIN BY DUSK
Dublin by Dusk city wide initiative that invites you to experience Dublin city with late openings on the last Thursday of every month. It is a mini-Culture Night every month. +++ The Day The World Rocked: Live Aid – Guided Tour
Every Friday at 14:00 and every Saturday at 11:00 a guided tour of the National Photographic Archive Exhibition “The Day The World Rocked: Live Aid” will take place. Live Aid was a world wide event in 1985 when two concerts took place simultaneously in London and Philadelphia with the intention to collect money to feed the world. Many of the greatest Pop and Rock performers of the time took part, from Status Quo to Joan Baez, Queen to Phil Collins and U2 to Madonna. Discover images and stories from Live Aid donated by Bob Geldof to the National Library of Ireland.

Check out the brand new “Humanarium” at RCSI, 118 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2 It is an exhibition space that will make health sciences and medical research more accessible and will help us to learn how to live longer, healthier and happier lives.
The exhibition space and the cafe that comes with it are open from 07:30-16:30 from Monday to Friday and 10:00-15:00 on Saturdays.

From Monday to Saturday every day at 11:30 and 14:00 a tour of the “Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again” exhibition will take place in the Bank of Ireland Culture & Heritage Centre, College Green, Dublin 2, D02 VR66. Seamus Heaney (1939-2013) was an Irish poet, playwright and translator. He received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature. Heaney was born in Northern Ireland and lived in Sandymount, Dublin4 from 1976 until his death.

+++ Dublin Castle & Chester Beatty Museum closed until January
From 05 May, Dublin Castle, Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction will be closed because of the EU Presidency until 31 December 2026. And from 15 June, the Chester Beatty Museum will also close until January.

+++ Dublin City Council Culture Company
Every week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. +++ IKEA Crafting / Music / Cooking Workshops
Ikea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well.
