Dublin Event Guide 940: Too Soon! – Dublin Gallery Weekend, Dublin Book Festival, Bohemia Flea Market, Science Week

Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Too Soon!

Dublin Gallery Weekend, Dublin Book Festival, Bohemia Flea Market, Science Week

Hi!!

This week I was in a business park in Dublin in the evening and to my surprise, two companies already had their Christmas trees up. One of them had gone all out – three trees on one floor, sparkling lights and all. I had to check the date again. It was 03 November! Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas – the lights, the music, the smell of cinnamon and mulled wine, the cosy evenings and the festive atmosphere – but early November feels a little premature, doesn’t it?

It is one thing to have Christmas sweets in supermarkets well before Halloween already. In the pursuit of sales, retail shops show no mercy! But does that justify to start Christmas already in our homes and work environments two months early?

There is something magical about Christmas lights brightening dark evenings, but that magic comes from timing too. When the lights appear too early, the anticipation fades before the season even begins. Part of what makes Christmas special is that it feels like a reward for getting through the cold and dark weeks of December – a joyful exclamation mark at the end of the year. Starting the celebrations six or seven weeks in advance risks diluting that feeling.

Maybe the trick is to find balance. We can enjoy a bit of early sparkle without rushing headlong into the full festive mode. A few lights here and there can lift the mood, but we can still let November be November – a month of cosy jumpers, hot drinks and slow evenings before the festive frenzy kicks in?

So, while I’ll definitely enjoy the lights and carols when the time comes, for now, I’m happy to wait a little longer. After all, anticipation is half the joy. And in the meantime, Dublin has plenty of wonderful (and free!) events to brighten our days without a single jingle bell in sight.

If you have friends or family or colleagues that also enjoy cultural events in Dublin, let them know that they can sign up for the free weekly Dublin Event Guide newsletter at getthislink.com/DEGSignup

The working title for my video series on YouTube is the “Better You” videos, they are all about 5-7 minute long about how to better your life. Check out this video series if you want to achieve more in life, but are talking yourself out of it. www.youtube.com/@JoergSteegmueller

Donations in November:
EUR 82

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

This week the wonderful person who helped with a donation was Orlaith. Thanks a lot!

We have another 3 weekends in November, so hopefully the EUR 118 needed to reach this month’s Dublin Event Guide Cost will be reached before the end of the month. December is a tricky month for donations every year, so the sooner we reach the required amount for November, the sooner we can start laying a foundation for December. Every cent counts and if you can help, please do so! Thanks so much for all your help! Your help is essential to keep the Dublin Event Guide going.

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

And there is more…

+++ SCIENCE WEEK
This year’s Science Week will run from 08-16 November. There is an interesting moon installation in Merrion Square and a Moongazing in Phoenix Park with the Astronomical Society. In addition a “Back for the Future – A Sustainable Escape Room” is touring around Dublin. All free events that I could find are in the listings above, but for a full picture go to www.scienceweek.ie/whats-on

+++ DUBLIN BOOK FESTIVAL
From 05-09 November the Dublin Book Festival will take place and will bring LOTS of literary and book-related events to Dublin. Nearly all events need booking, check them out at dublinbookfestival.com/explore-the-programme/ Different to many other festivals, the organisers are super helpful and have little “Free” labels showing on the event picture for all free events. Look out for them!
There is also a “Dublin Book Festival After Dark” Programme, but unfortunately the “Free” label has been dropped on that sub page: dublinbookfestival.com/event_category/dbf-after-dark/ So you better use the main event page (first link) to look for events if you are specifically interested in free events.

+++ IMRAM – Irish Language Literary Festival
The Irish Language Literary Festival “Imram” will take place from 08-23 November and all events and details can be found at imram.ie/

+++ Dublin Gallery Weekend
The Contemporary Art Gallery Association is inviting to the Dublin Gallery Weekend over this weekend. There will be new exhibitions, behind the scenes studio tours, meet the artist events, industry talks and workshops. From Thursday to Sunday a total of 60 free events will take place. All details are at dublingalleryweekend.ie/

+++ Public Service Transformation Week
Public Service Transformation Week is a yearly event to showcase innovation and progress in the public sector. It is organised by the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation and features various events (conferences, workshops and webinars) focused on themes around the topic of better public services. Some of the events are public, others are for closed user groups. The events take place from 10-14 November and the details are here www.gov.ie/en/department-of-public-expenditure-infrastructure-public-service-reform-and-digitalisation/transformation-week-2025/

+++ HUGH LANE GALLERY CLOSED – for 3 years!!
If you enjoy art in Dublin, take note! The Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square has closed its doors on 28 September 2025 for a major refurbishment. And the closure is expected to last a crazily long three years.
During the works, the historic 1930s wing of Charlemont House, the home of the Hugh Lane Gallery, will be upgraded to full modern museum standards, with improved environmental controls and security and the building will be connected to the new city library that is planned for Parnell Square.
The collection — including the always-fascinating Francis Bacon studio — will be packed and protected during the closure and the gallery plans to continue some outreach and off-site programming while the building is being transformed.
Three years without the Hugh Lane will be a huge cultural gap and the surprising thing is that the gallery has been closed despite the fact that the tender for the building works has not even been issued.
This is unfortunately another long-term closure of a museum in Dublin since the National History Museum closed on 01 September 2024 and will be closed for “several years” without an indication for a re-opening date.
(Thanks to Catherine O’L for pointing out to me that the Hugh Lane Gallery is already closed! I love that some of the Dublin Event Guide Readers actively help me! Thanks!!)

+++ Dublin City Council Culture Company
Every week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. If you are interested, check them out here cultureclubdublin.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows (This week you only see a few, because every month a new batch is uploaded not in a rolling way, but in a month by month way.)

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ IKEA Crafting / Music / Cooking Workshops
Ikea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well. Check them out on www.ikea.com/ie/en/stores/events/ikea-ballymun/

+++ Some more events:

Find Library events here www.dublincity.ie/events and Trinity College Events here www.tcd.ie/news_events/events/?day=18&month=03&year=2024&search=week

+++ Storytelling and Toddler Groups at Dublin City Libraries
The Dublin City Libraries have published a list of Storytelling and Toddler groups for age 0-4 across the Dublin City Libraries. You can find it here www.dublincity.ie/library/blog/storytelling-and-toddler-groups-dublin-city-libraries

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.
